Kingdom of Benin
11th November 2022In Tuesday’s Humanities lesson, Year 6 have been learning about religion in Western Africa in relation to our wider topic of the Kingdom of Benin.
Students explored the religious beliefs of the Kingdom of Benin and compared them to other religions around the world. They then discussed as a class the depictions of the various gods of Benin, examining various sculptures, images and ceremonies which honoured these gods. In our classroom, we moulded our own clay tiles and shaped them to mirror the holy animals of Benin (leopards, crocodiles, mudfish and eagles), helping them to appreciate the effort and level of detail which went into creating these religious artefacts.
